The CAEP breeding farm program offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience for those preparing for a career in equine reproduction, training, showing or marketing, or a combination of these skills. CAEP programs offer valuable real-life experience on a breeding farm, including active participation in the breeding process as well as learning about marketing and client relations.

Increase your knowledge in all aspects of the Thoroughbred, Standardbred or Sporthorse breeding and sales including breeding, foaling, working with young horses, training and marketing. Opportunities to learn about collecting stallions, preparing semen, and inseminating mares, as well as assisting in foaling, imprinting and halter breaking foals, starting young horses in ground work and under saddle, and showing/sales placements provided throughout the U.S. Most placements are 12 months in length. January to June is the breeding season. July to December offer opportunities to assist with sales preparation and care of young horses.

 

Skills to be learned may include:

  • Daily care of horses
  • Feeding
  • Turnout
  • Cleaning stalls
  • Assisting veterinarian and blacksmith
  • Some foaling
  • Sales preparation of horses for private sale and public auction
  • Grooming and exercise programs
